Below, you’ll see just a handful of the advantages of this sophisticated restorative procedure that you will find in our Puyallup office.
How Do CEREC Same-Day Crowns Work?
The CEREC crowns procedure is extremely simple and takes just over an hour to complete your crown from start to finish.
The biggest distinction of same-day crowns is the state-of-the-art technology of CAD/CAM dentistry, which uses computer imaging to map out the topography and design a well-fitted crown. This technology will allow you to avoid the mess of cast impressions generally used with conventional dental crowns. You also won’t have to wear temporary crowns, which can be uncomfortable and get in the way of your regular lifestyle. When you schedule your visit for CEREC crowns, you can expect an initial consultation and imaging, which will allow the creation of a 3D model of your crown on the computer.
This model is used to cast the ceramic crown that is then bonded to the tooth. The whole process will take about 2 hours and you will be able to return to normal activities right away.
First, we will remove all decay from the tooth then we will shape the tooth in preparation to take a digital picture. To allow the digital camera to take an acceptable image we will spray the tooth with a very fine powder. Once the image is captured, the tooth will appear on the computer screen in 3D which allows the dentist to design the restoration right in front of you. Once the design is completed, the CEREC will mill the restoration which takes about 15 minutes. When the restoration has finished milling, the dentist will place your restoration.
How Do I Know If I Need a Crown?
A dental crown may be needed if:
- You need to protect a weak tooth (such as from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth
- You need to restore a broken tooth or severely worn down tooth
- A dental bridge needs held in place
- A tooth treated with a root canal needs covered
- You need to cover a dental implant
- You want to cover a misshaped or severely discolored tooth/teeth
When Dental Crowns Are Needed
A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth with damage on the surface but healthy roots beneath the gum line. Whenever a tooth is cracked, chipped, or damaged beyond the point of repair with a filling, a crown can save what is left of the natural tooth structure to avoid extraction. Dental crowns may also be used to cap dental implants, which can replace teeth that have been lost due to injuries or decay.
CEREC Versus Traditional Crowns – What’s the Difference
Besides the fact that with CEREC you can get crowns in a single visit in just an hour, there are other reasons to choose CEREC crowns over traditional dental crowns. CEREC crowns tend to fit better than traditional lab-created crowns plus you don’t need temporary crowns as a stand in before getting a permanent crown. Additionally, you save time by only needing to come into our dental office once compared to several dental visits for traditional crowns. CEREC crowns also are aesthetically superior to metal and composite crowns as they are only made with porcelain which provides you with natural-looking results. Where traditional metal crowns can cause damage to your teeth, CEREC crowns do not cause any damage to your teeth and they are more durable.
Are Same Day Crowns Worth It?
Prior to CEREC, getting a crown for a weak or damaged tooth was a major pain – typically involving at least 2 visits to the dentist with a 1-3 week wait time for the crown to be made. While the CEREC technology does make getting a crown more convenient, make sure to choose a dentist, like BellaSmiles Dentistry, that specializes in quality same-day dental crowns. The same way that traditional lab-created crowns could come out poorly so can CEREC crowns if the dentist is not experienced in creating high-quality restorations.
