Why Does Your Child Need Regular Dental Check-Ups?

Did you know that tooth decay is the number one chronic infectious disease among children in the US? Many parents are shocked to learn that tooth decay can begin in children as young as 1 year in age. And kids with tooth decay are far more likely to develop immediate and long-term oral health issues which include pain, infections, difficulty speaking, problems eating food, tooth discoloration and even tooth loss.

Regular dental check-ups and exams can ensure that any potential dental concerns are addressed before they become a problem. The condition of a child's teeth can change rapidly even if the child had a healthy dental check-up only 6 months prior. Changes in diet or habits (such as thumb sucking) can quickly render a child vulnerable to decay or misalignment.

In additional to visual examinations, regular teeth cleanings for your child eradicate plaque and debris that can build up in between teeth and in other hard to reach places. While a good homecare routine is important, these professional cleanings are an additional way to keep smiles healthy. Most dental insurance providers cover dental exams and cleanings every 6 months. If you have any questions about your dental coverage, please give us a call today. We're happy to answer any questions you have.

Your Child's First Dental Exams & Cleaning Visit

During the first visit, our goal is to start building a trusting and comfortable relationship with your child as we lay the groundwork for a lifetime of healthy gums and teeth. We welcome and encourage parents to accompany their child during the initial exam. This gives us an opportunity to communicate with you about your child's dental health. In subsequent visits, we kindly ask that parents assume the role of a silent observer if you decide to join your child during treatment. Studies have shown that children 3 years of age and older tend to do better at the dentist when they are left to experience their visit independently and in the care of a specialized pediatric dental staff.

How Often Should Your Child Go To The Dentist?

Children should start seeing a dentist on a regular basis either when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. Then they should visit a pediatric dentsit every 6 months for a regular dental check-up and cleaning. In between visits, it is recommended that parents supervise children brushing their teeth until age 7 or 8 to ensure that they are properly brushing. For best dental health, children should brush their teeth twice daily and floss at least once per day.

Regular dental check-ups every 6 months are necessary for young children as neglected cavities can and frequently do lead to problems which affect developing permanent teeth. To help prevent cavities, feed your child a healthy diet and avoid sugary foods and drinks and brush and floss regularly.
